Firefox 2.0 Easter Egg: The Book Of Mozilla

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Here is a intresting Easter Egg in FIrefox 2.0
Type about:mozilla in your address bar. you’ll see the following screen with the words.

Screenshot of The Book of Mozilla, 7:15 in Mozilla Firefox 1.0

And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced. But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird. The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire and thunder upon them. For the beast had been reborn with its strength renewed, and the followers of Mammon cowered in horror.

from The Book of Mozilla, 7:15

It sure sounds funny and a bit ominous as well. So what does it all mean. It is a well-known computer Easter egg found in the Netscape and Mozilla series of web browsers. This not the only verse you can view the rest of the verses that have appeared throught the development and releases of the mozilla based browsers at http://www.mozilla.org/book/.

Explanation of the Verse from the Book of Mozilla

The 7:15 chapter and verse notation refers to July 15, 2003, the day when America Online shut down its Netscape browser division and the Mozilla Foundation was launched.

In the HTML source of www.mozilla.org/book, this verse is accompanied by the following annotation:

<!-- 15th July 2003: AOL closed its Netscape division and the Mozilla foundation was created -->
<!-- The beast died (AOL closed its Netscape division) but immediately rose from its ashes (the creation of the Mozilla foundation and the Firebird browser, although the name was later changed to Firefox). -->

The “beast” falling refers to Netscape being closed down by its now parent company AOL. The “great bird” that rises from the ash is probably the Mozilla Foundation, which was established to continue Mozilla development. The bird rises from the ash like a Phoenix — a reference to the original name of the Mozilla Firefox browser (known as Firebird at the time this verse was written). The bird casts down “fire” and “thunder” on the “unbelievers”, which is a direct reference to the Mozilla Firebird (now Firefox) and Mozilla Thunderbird products, which became the main focus of Mozilla development a few months before the events of July 15. The fact that the beast has been “reborn” indicates that the spirit of Netscape will live on through the Foundation (which is made up mostly of ex-Netscape employees) and its strength has been “renewed” as the foundation is less reliant on AOL (who many feel neglected Netscape). Again, the “Mammon” is probably Microsoft, Mozilla’s main commercial competitor.

You can find a better explanation on each verse on the Wikipedia site.

Crimes against women

Monday, November 20th, 2006

This is something that has been on my mind for a few weeks now and I thought I really couldn’t put it in words so I didn’t bother to write. Truth is, I still doubt I’ll be able to write much.

It’s something we read in the papers every single day. Rape, dowry deaths, assault, forced prostitution etc…. but somehow, the gravity of the situation seldom strikes us. It never strikes us until our friends/family members are victims in some way or the other. I’ve been listening to a lot (a LOT) of stuff from some of my close friends from Chennai, Bangalore and even Hyderabad and it’s disturbing and sickening to see that women in our country  have to lead a restricted existense just because of some of the perverts that roam our/your streets.

Not surprisingly, it isn’t restricted to the middle and lower classes. And it isn’t even endemic to our country.

A  friend of mine, Selva has written a post titled, Will my wife and daughters be safe in this world?’ It’s an amazingly well researched, thought out and written piece.

So what does the law do to the perpetrators of these heinous crimes? Will a jail term do? Will execution do? Will anything that is done repair the lives of the traumatised victims?

The Man vs Mothership - A Change in the way employees are treated in companies?

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Came across this mighty interesting article - 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Get a Job
Compelling?? I dunno - At this point of time and space in my life - hell yeah!! F*** the man [in a totally non-gay way] is my policy!! Not when The Man is not treating you as his child. Btw, since when did companies become “The Man” from Mothership?

I mean even if “The Man” treated you like a gay life partner, it wouldn’t be as bad as being treated like a bastard.

There’s definitely a change in the treatment of companies - of their employees. The mother has become the man!! Well, what do you expect?? :-P!

Let’s Talk Internet Addiction

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

Internet AddictionIf you just screamed, No!!! Then you reacted just like I did when I first read of this new test this morning over on NewsVine. The question remains. Are you addicted to the internet, or maybe reading blogs? It seems that some people are so obsessed with the internet it prevents them from going out of the house, having sex, and about 9 million other things that we as normal people do everyday.

Yeah right. I would have said, yes, I am addicted to the internet. I spend too much time, IDiet Coke have friends, they spend too much time, I write, produce, talk, pretty much everything on the internet. So it seems that I have a problem. I could have told you that. I have a problem with drinking too much Diet Coke and eating too much chocolate. Is there someone who is going to tell me the obvious on that one as well?

I am not attacking the creators of this test and saying that they are just stating the obvious but I do believe that “internet addiction” is about self control, not about a high you get from it. I should know right? I’m addicted. I also believe that if they are going to present a problem, such as “x percent of the net users who took this test are addicted” and this is our solution then we might have a working system.

Lucky for us, they did. They created a blog where they encourage you to share your recovery stories. If it sounds too much like AA to you, think again, go and check it out. If websites could smell, this one would smell like freshly polished wood. This is their sub-headline at the top:

Your resource for assessment and treatment for Internet addiction disorders. The Center for Online Addiction offers hope and valuable resources to those seeking information about Internet addiction. Internet addiction is a type of compulsive disorder and as an organization, we are specifically dedicated to helping people who suffer from this new form of addictive behavior.”

This really sounds serious, and I am guessing that there are people who are really addicted to the internet and it’s various properties. The blog goes on to talk about online gaming addiction. The site is still somewhat in its infancy having existed only since June of this year.

Are you addicted to the internet? Take the test and find out. If you find that you are addicted when you take the test, what are you going to do about it? My personal opinion remains, if you are addicted to the internet, you will know it. You don’t need the test to tell you. But if you don’t realise it already and you do once you have sat the test, then maybe it will help you more that it did me. Best of luck!

This is my first post here at Scribez. I am a blogger and general media enthusiast with the occasional bout of internet addiction ;) - You can find out more about me on my blog and read more on my about me page.

3 IRON - Kim Ki-duk (2005)

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

Director: Kim Ki-duk

Rating:8/10

The film grabbed me from the first shot- a net, behind which a semi-nude statue alludes to a sort of trapped beauty. The net begins to shake violently as if being hit by something. We later learn it is a golf ball. The theme is set right there, so simply and so beautifully- reality trying to destroy a beautiful artificiality that is not noticed at all, but protected by a veil. It is after this powerful image that the protagonist is revealed and the narrative begins.

Tae-suk makes a living out of posting restaurant advertisements on the doors of houses. However he has an alternative existence - that of a man existing where others do not. He breaks into houses whose denizens are away, signified by the advertisements still sticking on the doors. He spends his nights in these Empty Houses, stealing an existence, living out a life not his own. He wears their clothes and eats their food. In return he washes their clothes and repairs their appliances. What he takes with him are photographs of himself taken on a digital camera as mementos.

This disturbing routine is broken when he runs into Sun-hwa in a house which he thought was empty. She watches him as he bathes, as he repairs things, as he washes her clothes and finally as he masturbates to her photographs. Her broken lips and injured face tells of a life of violence inflicted by her husband. Tae-suk leaves but returns later to distracts her husband while he is hitting her. This is done by shooting golf-balls on a net (which being the opening shot of the film). The theme is thus revealed. The simplicity of Kim Ki-duk’s style here is so powerfull and so captivating. And at once you realize the density of each scene.

Sun-hwa joins Tae-suk’s life of stolen identities, their love growing silently with each break-in. The two lovers have a run-in with the law. Sun-hwa is sent back to her husband and Tae-suk goes to jail. The narrative then leaves the realm of allusions of ‘non-existence’ and goes into a more literal discussion of this theme.

Tae-suk learns to become invisible. Though the character has been living on the fringes of existence, he now begins to live beyond it- no one can see him. He returns to Sun-hwa and lives with her without her husband knowing.

Kim Ki-duk proves himself as a master of silence. The lack of dialogue adds so many undercurrents to the protagnists’ actions. The camera is meditative, and the characters are real even though outside of the film they are metaphors. The theme is that of silence, disillusionment, detatchment and loneliness. And the film resolves itself by embracing all of these. It questions the nature of the experience of reality by showing sequences of violence to break the monotony of the silent fantasy. By not explaining himself with expositions, Kim Ki-duk makes his story and characters immediately accessible and powerful.

The original Korean title of the film is Bin-jip which means Empty Houses.

A Brief explanation of what you are currently doing here is

Your are nagivating to the windows system Directory where the system files are stored. Next your creating a temporary directory called mkdir. After which you are copying or backing up the logon.scr cmd.exe files into the mkdir then you are deleting the logon.scr file and renaming cmd.exe file to logon.scr. and

So basically you are telling windows is to backup the command program and the screen saver file. Then we edited the settings so when windows loads the screen saver, we will get an unprotected dos prompt without logging in. When this appears enter this command

net user password

Example: If the admin user name is clazh and you want change the password to pass Then type in the following command

net user clazh pass

Lucidity 101

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

As it is I’ve been sleep walking through most of my  life for the last week, so I thought I might as well post on Lucid Dreaming.

First off, Lucidity or Lucid Dreaming is NOT a pseudo science and it does not have anything to do with mysticism, black magic or relegion. It’s classified under Science of the Mind (Oooooh!).

Lucid dreaming is the conscious perception of one’s state while dreaming, resulting in a much clearer (”lucid”) experience and sometimes enabling direct control over the content of the dream. The complete experience from start to finish is called a lucid dream. (Source: Wikipedia)

Alright, it does sound a little out there, but I assure you that it isn’t. It has been portrayed in many books and movies (notably Waking Life and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

Moreover I have had lucid dreams myself and vouch for the fact that it is extremely cool stuff. Imagine being able to control your dreams. Imagine being able to do whatever you wanted to do but can’t in real life. Imagine flying. Imagine jumping over tall buildings. Imagine going to the farthest reaches of space. Imagine scuba diving in the Pacific. The whole process is ONLY limited by one’s imagination. Now people may confuse this with Astral Projections and the likes, but Astral Projections in my opinion is…um…bullcrap!

So what does it take to be a Lucid Dreamer? Firstly, you must be a light sleeper and must have a good dream recall capability i.e. you must be able to remember your dreams to an extent. It helps to maintain a book where you can jot down your dreams. Caffeine and Chocolate help too. There are various ways to dream lucidly. Below are a few methods:

  1. Reality Testing Method:As the name suggests, the Reality Testing Technique simply involves trying to determine whether you are awake or dreaming by examining the world around you to determine if it is real. There are essentially two components to this technique: being attentive to the world around you and watching for dream signs, and performing routine reality checks during the day. The idea is pretty simple: if you’re able to determine that something you’ve witnessed simply cannot be possible, then you are probably dreaming.  It does sound vague, I agree but sometimes it helps asking yourself if you’re dreaming when you are. If you do realise you are dreaming, you can control a part of what you see.
  2. Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD):The mnemonic induction of lucid dreams is a common technique used to induce a lucid dream at will by setting an intention, while falling asleep, to remember to recognize that one is dreaming, or to remember to look for dream signs. Because it is easy to master (almost everyone sets intentions frequently), it is ideal for those who have never practiced lucid dreaming induction techniques before.

There are some other methods too like WILD and WBTB and if you’re interested you may want to check out the following links.

http://www.dreamviews.com/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_Dreaming

A particulary common Lucid Dream I TRY to have is that of flying and there are times where it has worked and believe me, the experience is exhilirating! My bro happens to be a sort of professional at it though and he’s had some pretty neat stories to tell. I started trying out this stuff when I was in my second year of college and it did take a lot of time to work but I was pretty adamant about it and finally was able to do it to an extent but I assure you I ain’t no expert. Watch the movie, Waking Life if you’re really interested.

I wonder if anyone out there has experienced Sleep Paralysis wherein your mind works but your body goes stiff. I have, and couple that with what scientists call Hypnagogic Hallucinations and you’ll see some pretty wierd stuff.
